Briers, Waste Management that won’t cost the Earth!

The subject of waste, whether domestic or commercial, is one which raises serious questions about can it be recycled, where it ends up and what impact there is on the environment. Wm. M Briers & Son (Tamworth) Ltd were established in 1939 and over the years has formed a reputation for reliable, competitively priced services for waste management and recycling, always with an eye on ensuring that the environment is put first.

The company has been zero waste to landfill for 10 years, a record that present Managing Director Edwin Briers is rightly proud of. By investing heavily in eco-positive technologies at their Material Recycling Facility at Amington, Tamworth, the vast majority of recyclable material is recovered from the general waste stream, meaning that only the true, non-recyclable element is sent to their partner ‘R1 waste to energy technology’ plant in Sweden.

Briers customers can be assured that their non-hazardous waste is recycled or recovered in some way or another. Briers have won many local and national awards by ensuring their own environmental impact is reduced to a minimum, whilst increasing recycling rates and reducing waste previously sent to landfill. Briers exhibits a commitment to both the community and local environment through its work with local schools and groups, along with reducing its own carbon footprint by creating and building its own twenty acre wildlife habitat with two fishing lakes and planting of over 2000 native trees.

Edwin is proud of the heritage of the company set up by his Grandfather: “William set up the business here in Tamworth eighty years ago to which the company remains to this day a family business, being run now by the third generation Edwin and his sister Jennetta. I used to come here in my summer holidays from school and I loved tinkering with engines from a young age, learning to drive at six and arc weld at the age of 10. I obviously learned a lot and therefore was destined to be involved in the business.

“Although having larger facilities now at Amington and Atherstone, Warwickshire, the company still remains and operates from its original depot next to the Coventry canal .This used to be an industrialised area with the canal and Anchor docks next door used for transport of coal by Samuel Barlow Coal Carrying Company. Now we are one of the few original businesses still in operation. The family are still involved with my sister, brother-in-law and my wife as part of the management team.

“Where possible the company have always tried to utilise local business to whom we can in turn offer our own services too, therefore having our own customer D W Commercials become an official DAF service provider has added to the benefits of now introducing DAF vehicles into our fleet.

“The initial purchase from Greenhous Commercials in Wolverhampton of three DAF vehicles, two FA LF 210 12 tonne vehicle fitted with NTM refuse collection bodywork, trading standards certified weighing equipment and PURGO telematics will increase the companies efficiency by generating live time data when collecting waste throughout the its Midlands operational area. The DAF FAD CF 450 32Tonne vehicle has been fitted with British built Boughton Hooklift equipment with Kwik Cova, which has been tried and tested by the company now over many years and all of the new additions will replace existing fleet vehicles as part of the companies environmental policy to ensure its fleet remains of the lowest impact on the environment.

“We have a large selection of containers available from waste safes and wheelie bins to skips and Rollonoffs, all to suit our customer’s various requirements for the safe recycling and recovery of hazardous and non-hazardous waste to which these new DAF vehicles will add to keeping our company competitive and our customers green.”
