With over 400 trucks out on hire to its clients, 65% of which are DAFs, Bickford Truck Hire are continually evaluating their stock and replace older vehicles with new, such as the latest DAF additions from Greenhous Commercials in Wolverhampton.
Bickford was founded in 1948 and remains a family run business to this day. Miles Bickford Snr is the MD and, along with fellow Director David Bickford, they recalled their influence on the change of the company some 30 years previously. Miles recalls: “Bickford was a commercial vehicle recovery and repair company in its infancy. We did a lot of work with Goodyear in Wolverhampton. The truck hire side started slowly when Goodyear closed and the family saw an opportunity to expand. We decided to go into the specialist truck market with skip-loader, grab loader and crane adaptations.

“David and I fitted the first crane some 30 years ago.We developed a body-building workshop and a paint shop on site so that we could be a ‘one stop shop’ for the design, development and building of our client’s specialist trucks. We have built a reputation for supplying a prompt, reliable and helpful service to all of our customers and that means we have long-term relationships with them. We pride ourselves that the quality of vehicles and standard of service offered is second to none.”
David oversees the body-building, sourcing capital equipment, some of the sales and rental of trucks.Another family Director, Miles Jnr, is responsible for sales, purchases and hire, with Miles Snr overseeing maintenance, MOT, roadworthiness and compliance of the massive fleet of vehicles. Bickford manage the maintenance and refurbishment of vehicles at their base in Featherstone, near Wolverhampton. Each vehicle on hire is recalled each year for inspection and MOT.
Routes for the hire and also sale of trucks coming back off hire contracts are mainly to businesses in the construction and waste management industries and some hauliers right across the UK and Ireland. Ex-stock vehicles find their way to new owners across the UK and the world with DAFs being highly sought after as used vehicles.Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand and Africa are destinations for some of Bickford used stock.
Bickford’s association with Greenhous Commercials goes back several decades and the ease of communication and operation between the two businesses has led to a trusting relationship being forged. Bickford’s regard the DAF product as the best overall package for us in terms of reasonable price, excellent supply of genuine parts and an ease of dealing with the likes of Rob Binnion (Greenhous Fleet Sales Manager) who we have dealt with for some 20 years.
The latest acquisitions in 2019 are three 26 tonne Gross crane flats, 6 x 2 rigid, three 18 tonne Rigid and three 7.5 tonne Rigids. These are a few of the vehicles planned for this year as we continue to upgrade the whole of the fleet to Euro 6 within the next 12 months.
“Greenhous Commercials are like an extension of our own company we work so closely together. We rate them as the best DAF dealer in the country and our overall best dealer for any brand, and that is down to the service we receive from Rob and his colleagues.
“We have dealt with Scott Westwood (Greenhous Fleet Parts Sales Manager) for over 20 years and remember him delivering parts on the parts van! Greenhous offer us access to trailer parts, consumables, tail lifts and alternative truck manufacturer parts. Scott is helping us to develop a new parts storage system linked to Greenhous via the Impress system which means we always have parts available on the shelf through their 6 times a day parts delivery. Our stock is regularly audited and redundant stock is taken back by Greenhous.
“The computerisation of the system also means that we can look at pricing comparisons for DAF dealers across the country via the DAF Web Shop.It also means we become much more efficient in logging of jobs to be carried out. Scott also informed us that we will be receiving a ‘single point invoicing’ from DAF as they accumulate invoices from all DAF dealers we use into a single invoice, again increasing efficiency for us.”
Care of the environment is also an area of the business that concerns Miles Snr as he explains: “We analyse every area of the business to ensure that we are keeping a close eye on our management of waste recycling for example oil, plastics, paint, wood, batteries and cardboard. We select trucks with the best Euro 6 fuel efficient engines. Reducing our carbon footprint is important to us.”
